Shirley Abram

ABRAM: Shirley Abram; Born on September 16, 1925, succumbed to cancer on November 3. 2013. At the age of 88.  She died in her Gateway Towers apartment surrounded by the view she loved, her daughter Linda Koban, her beloved grandson, Ari, her dear cousin, Karl Meyers; and her devoted friends, Francis, Miriam and Hope.  After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Shirley married Leon Abram on June 8, 1947 and together they enjoyed traveling and entertaining until his death on October 5, 2000.  Shirley and Leon’s porch in Highland Park was the destination of choice for cousins, aunts, and uncles on summer evenings where bowls of fruit and pretzels were as constant as the laughter and lively conversation. In the 1970s Shirley contributed innumerable hours to conducting interviews for the Oral History Project of the National Council of Jewish Women’s Pittsburgh Section. She was an avid bridge player and a regular in two bridge games which she attended religiously until a few weeks before her death. She will be missed by her many close friends some dating back to kindergarten and college, others made throughout her life and in her final years. She will be remembered as a mom who liked to laugh and came through in the rough moments; as; “the perfect grandmother,” granting unconditional love and pride, as a dear friend always ready to listen, and by all who knew her  as a ‘nice lady.”  Services were held at Rodef Shalom Temple. Interment B’nai Israel Cemetery. It is requested remembrances be in the form of donations to the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, 1405 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
