The Branch (formerly Jewish Residential Services), a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit providing community-based support to adults with “persistent mental illness, developmental, and/or intellectual disabilities,” named Karen Oosterhous its new executive director, according to a news release.

Oosterhous has served as The Branch’s interim executive director since July 2026, following her role as the organization’s director of development and communications.

While serving as interim executive director, she “focused on building a sustainable foundation for the organization’s programs, reinforcing The Branch’s financial stability, and furthering community partnerships,” the news release stated.

Before joining The Branch, Oosterhouse led statewide initiatives at Achieva/the Arc of Greater Pittsburgh, expanding “inclusive higher education opportunities” for students with intellectual disabilities.

She was appointed by Gov. Josh Shapiro to serve on the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council and is also a board member of Friendship Circle, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition, Westchester Clubhouse for the Arts, CDG CARE and a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh.

“I’m deeply honored by the confidence the Board has placed in me,” Oosterhous said. “The Branch plays a critical role in the lives of our members and participants, and in the wider community. I’m grateful for its strong foundation, and for the many people whose generosity, trust, and belief in our mission make this work possible. I look forward to building on that foundation, honoring that support, and continuing to meet the needs of the
people we serve.”

“Karen has already demonstrated the leadership, judgment, and genuine commitment to our mission that the organization needs,” said Mike Samuels, president of The Branch’s Board of Trustees. “Her work over the past several months speaks for itself, and the Board is confident that her vision and experience will guide The Branch into a strong and exciting future.”

Oosterhous succeeds Nancy E. Gale, the executive director of organization from October 2018 through June 2026. PJC
