Lynn Cullen finds new home on Pittsburgh radio’s evening slot
Lynn Cullen is back over the airwaves in Pittsburgh.
Cullen’s new show debuted Monday, March 9, and will broadcast Monday through Friday, from 5 to
7 p.m. on WAMO-AM (860).
Her show will precede the “Bev Smith Show,” which is nationally syndicated from Pittsburgh.
Cullen is excited to have the opportunity to team up with Smith.
“She is someone I admire, and being able to be in tandem with her is a real opportunity for me,” Cullen said.
Cullen will bring her brand of political talk to WAMO — a historically African-American radio station.
“It’s going to be pretty much like I’ve always done,” she said. “It’s going to be a mix of politics with social commentary and whatever people are talking about.”
WAMO went on the air for the first time in 1948 in Homestead as WHOD. The station changed its call letters in 1956 to W-A-M-O (to represent the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers). WAMO-FM went on the air in 1960.
Today, WAMO-AM plays R&B and classic soul, and features The Steve Harvey Morning Show. The FM format is described as urban
contemporary.
“It’s a great station,” Cullen said of WAMO. “It’s an iconic Pittsburgh station with a long and storied
history.”
Cullen, a member of The Jewish Chronicle’s board of trustees, said she hopes her being a white radio personality will help broaden her audience, and WAMO’s as well.
“I don’t think it matters that it’s a so-called African-American station. They saw an opportunity for them and I saw an a opportunity for me.”
Cullen’s old radio station was WPTT-AM (1360).
