Chronicle poll results: Favorite fall Jewish holiday
We asked our readers what their favorite fall Jewish holiday is. Here's what they said.
Last week, the Chronicle asked its readers in an online poll the following question: “What is your favorite fall Jewish holiday?” Of the 148 people who responded, 40% said Sukkot; 34% said Rosh Hashanah; 13% said Yom Kippur; 11% said Simchat Torah; and 2% said Shemini Atzeret. Comments were submitted by 24 people. A few follow.
Sukkot is such a visual feast. I love Sukkot in Jerusalem, particularly. Everywhere a booth, even on sides of buildings. I miss being near an area where most people celebrate.
I love the prayers and the tone of Yom Kippur.
I will be interested to see if Shemini Atzeret gets even one vote! Simchat Torah takes me back to my youth.
Shemini Atzeret is the autumn holiday that needs more P.R., sort of like Harpo Marx or Jermaine Jackson got overshadowed by their much more famous siblings.
Rosh Hashanah: All the solemnity of Yom Kippur without the fasting.
Sukkot is so special, because we build a sukkah and decorate it, hopefully with the help of kids, at and also at the synagogue. It is also when we have a vegan potluck dinner on Shabbat, so we can taste healthy foods that might be new to us who are not vegan. It’s just a colorful, joyous holiday, when we can also connect with our ancestors who built and lived in sukkot so long ago!
The mellifluous melody of the Kol Nidre and the fasting kickstart to a long overdue diet make Yom Kippur my favorite.

I love all of the fall holidays, each for a different reason. Rosh Hashanah for its majesty, Yom Kippur for its solemnity and Sukkot for its joyousness. And of course, all of the special foods for their deliciousness! PJC
