The Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Western Pennsylvania will hold its 31st Induction Ceremony and Banquet, Sunday, May 19, at Congregation Beth Shalom, 5915 Beacon St., Squirrel Hill. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony.
This year’s inductees are Mark Frank (swimming), Aaron Krause (baseball) and the late Mickey Steiner (golf).
In addition, the JSHOF will present the Manny Gold Humanitarian Award to Meyer “Skip” Grinberg, in recognition of his volunteer work and community service. Grinberg has been active at the local, national and international level with many educational and sports organizations.
Anthony “Peppy” Giovane will be this year’s recipient of the Ziggy Kahn Memorial Award, which is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the children of the community. Giovane was a longtime physical education teacher at Pittsburgh Allderdice and had an impact on the lives of many Squirrel Hill youth.
The JSHOF also will present the 2013 Nathan H. Kaufmann Scholastic Awards to local Jewish high school seniors who have achieved at a high level athletically and scholastically.
This year’s winners are Jonah Baron, Matthew Fidel, Sydney Haber, Julia Holber, Samuel Maizlech, Orly Olbum, Jonas Portillo (Allderdice); Jason Beiriger (Pittsburgh Central Catholic); Ethan Dysert, Betsy Erlanger, Joel Klein (Upper St. Clair); Grant Goldberg (Pine-Richland); Harrison Gottlieb, Destin Groff, Madison Pollock, Theodore Ross, Micaela Saperstein, Ali Sarner, Felicia Tissenbaum (Shady Side Academy); Nathan Kleya (Gateway); Gavrielle Krohner (Peters Township); Harrison Newman (Fox Chapel); Kate Rosenthal (Ellis); Darren Zaslau (Mt. Lebanon).

The JSHOF was founded in 1982 to financially support Jewish related sports programs in western Pennsylvania and Israel while recognizing area Jewish men and women who have achieved a high level in athletic competition.
All contributions, membership fees and proceeds from the annual banquet are distributed to youth sports organizations in the Pittsburgh area and in Israel.
