Pittsburghers have tennis success at Maccabiah 18

Pittsburgh’s own Emma Leibowicz advanced to the second bronze medal round in the women’s Open division tennis tournament at the 18th World Maccabiah Games in Israel.
After winning her first match in straight sets over Great Britain’s Olivia Tara Davis, Leibowicz lost her second match 2-0 to Doron Muravnik of Israel. Despite the setback, the Allerdice graduate went on to win her match-up in the second bronze medal round 1-0 against Nadezhda Shein of Estonia, and looks to move on in the tournament.
Pittsburgh’s other participant in the games, Mt. Lebanon tennis player Carly Small, had a first-round bye in the women’s Junior division. The senior at Mt. Lebanon High School had not has not yet competed as the Chronicle went to print.
In related news, Team USA is in first place in the senior division at the World Jewish Hockey Championship in Metulla, Israel. As of Wednesday, the Americans were 3-0, with one overtime win, and led second place Canada, 3-0, with one overtime loss, by two points.
Team USA includes a defenseman from Pittsburgh, Dylan Reese of Mt. Lebanon. As of Wednesday, Reese had appeared in all four games the team played, scoring two goals and earning one assist.
