As one of the cornerstone programs at The Tree of Life, The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh plays a critical role in helping people understand the long history of antisemitism, the horrors of the Holocaust, and its ongoing relevance today. We are aware of concerns raised regarding a recent presentation about antisemitism given by a Holocaust Center staff member. (“A profound failure by a Pittsburgh institution,” online Aug. 6 and in print Aug. 7)
To be clear, The Tree of Life unequivocally believes that the Jewish people have a right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland.
As an institution born out of tragedy, we are strongly committed to ensuring that every Jewish person in the United States and all over the world can express their personal views without fear of retribution or bias.

At the heart of everything we do at The Tree of Life is the belief in our shared humanity. We draw inspiration from how Pittsburghers across the city rallied around our community in our darkest moments after Oct. 27, 2018. We seek to lead with grace, compassion, and curiosity as we cultivate meaningful engagement with our neighbors to whom we are so grateful. We believe that by doing so, we can heal the persistent societal wounds caused by antisemitism and all forms of identity-based hate.
