JCC plays over .500 as GPIBL season opens
Finishing off the first half of their 2008-09 basketball seasons at the Jewish Community Center, both the boys and girls varsity teams are one game above .500 with identical records at 3-2.
The boys, who are led by third-year Head Coach Andy Pakler and returning seniors Alex Canton, Stephen Canton and Eric Levine, are looking to win their third straight league championship in the Greater Pittsburgh Independent Basketball League.
After the regular season and playoffs end in February, the boy’s team will travel to Miami for a postseason tournament.
The girls team is coached by first year Head Coach Andrew Krasnow. Seniors Hayley Warner, Emily Silverman and Gwenn Barney lead the varsity team.
They are currently playing in the CYM Basketball League, and while they don’t have playoffs or a postseason tournament, basketball director for the JCC Alex Speck said that there has been talk about possibly creating some kind of tournament for the girls varsity team.
The next boys varsity game will be Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. at the JCC. The girls will be in action at home Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 also at 8:30 p.m.
