Herbert I. Torbin

TORBIN: In Loving Memory of Herbert I. Torbin. Herbert I. Torbin, born Oct. 6, 1941, lived a remarkable life defined by devotion to his family, service to his community, an adventurous spirit and a heart that always made room for others. Herb’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Becky Torbin, who shared his life, love and passion. He was a devoted father to his two sons, Matt Torbin and his wife, Aleksandra, and Drew Torbin and his wife, Jessica. He was a loving grandfather to Arthur and Hania, Matt and Aleksandra’s children, and Winter, Drew and Jessica’s daughter, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Herb was the biological son of Joseph Reiter and was lovingly raised by his mother Jean and Al Torbin. He is also remembered by his sister, Arlene Goldstein, and her husband, Bob, along with their four children, as well as extended family and dear friends. A proud Pittsburgh native, Herb attended Taylor Allderdice High School before continuing his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied engineering. His professional journey took him to West Virginia and New Jersey, where he worked for International Nickel Company. Eventually, his love for home and family brought him back to Pittsburgh, where he joined his father in the family business, Mason Oil Company, continuing a family tradition built on hard work and dedication. Herb believed in giving back to others and devoted much of his life to serving his community. He spent 30 years dedicating his time to The Masons. As well as being a Shriner, he volunteered his time and efforts to raise money for Shriners Children’s Hospital, supporting its mission to help children and families in need. His commitment to service extended to law enforcement, as he volunteered with the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department and later dedicated seven active years to volunteering with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department in Florida. Herb’s compassion extended to animals, too. Alongside his beloved wife, Becky, he found a devotion in rescuing dogs. Together, they adopted seven dogs and, through patience, training and unconditional love, helped give them the care and second chance they deserved. Herb was also a dedicated supporter of K91 Rescued to Rescue, an organization that pairs shelter dogs with veterans and first responders living with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and other challenges. His support reflected his deep belief that the bond between people and animals could change lives. A man whose personality was truly larger than life, Herb had a gift for making an impression wherever he went. He was funny, loving and never one to shy away from a good discussion or a spirited argument. He brought energy and character into every room, and his loyalty to those he loved never wavered. He adored Becky, his children and his grandchildren, and the love he had for his family was evident in the way he lived. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend whose presence made life more memorable. Herb also had a lifelong passion for motorcycles that began when he was just 14 years old. An avid collector and racer, he enjoyed antique BMW motorcycles and collecting Harley-Davidsons. His enthusiasm for motorcycles remained a defining part of his life, reflecting his adventurous nature and appreciation for the craftsmanship, history and freedom they represented. Music was another source of joy for Herb. His love of Irish music helped make his home a place filled with personality, warmth and life. Whether sharing a laugh, engaging in a lively conversation, spending time with his family, or caring for the dogs he and Becky welcomed into their home, Herb made the most of the moments that mattered. Herb leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, generosity and service. His life touched not only his family and friends but also the community he served, the causes he supported and the animals he helped save. He will be remembered for his unmistakable personality, his enormous heart, his devotion to Becky and his family, and the many ways he made the world around him a better place. Herb will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Services were held at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. Interment private. The family invites those wishing to honor Herb’s memory to consider making a donation to K91 Rescued to Rescue, 8045 91st Avenue Vero Beach, FL 32967, or alternatively, to a charity of your choice. schugar.com PJC
