Gerry Edelstein
EDELSTEIN: Gerry Edelstein, born June 9, 1915, passed away, October 21, 2013, surrounded by loving relatives in Aventura, FL. Gerry was predeceased by her devoted husband, Dr. Abe James Edelstein, a well known and highly respective dermatologist in Johnstown, PA, to whom she was married for sixty-two years. Mrs. Edelstein is survived by her two daughters, Carol Siegel (Ned) and Nancy Alexander, five grandchildren, Lauren Siegel (Brian Berele), Adam Siegel (Carol), Jonathan Siegel (Lisa), Elise Bhagwat (Aditya), and Eric Alexander (Cristina Arumi), and twelve great-grandchildren, Maggie Siegel-Berele, Rachael Siegel-Berele, Nina Siegel, Alexandra Siegel, Nathan Siegel, Amanda Siegel, Ezra Alexander, Noah Siegel, Aden Bhagwat, Elina Bhagwat, Jack Siegel, and Pia Alexander. She is predeceased by her brother Milton (“Sonny”) Stein and sister Marion Stein and survived by her sister Bernice Levenson. Born in Philadelphia, she and Abe raised their family in Johnstown before retiring to Sunny Isles Beach. Gerry was active in state and local civic and charitable organizations for many years in Johnstown. Among her proudest accomplishments was the award she received from Dr. Jonas Salk for leading an initiative for polio immunizations across Pennsylvania. Her vibrant personality, sharp wit, and generosity made an impression on all who knew her. She and Abe enjoyed travel around the world, the arts, intellectual pursuits, and heated backgammon games. Gerry was always admired for her style and appreciation for the finer things of life. She had a profound impact on her entire family and will be missed tremendously. Friends will be received from noon until time of funeral service at 1 pm on Friday at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave. Johnstown, PA 15902. Rabbi Howie Stein. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.
