Dr. Hirsh Wachs
WACHS: It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Hirsh Wachs announces his passing on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. He was born on September 15, 1930 in Natrona Heights, son of the late Dr. Isadore, DMD, and Pauline Wachs, brother of the late Fred Wachs. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Trudy Weiss Wachs. He was a loving and devoted father to Rabbi Dovid (Ettie) Wachs, Ellen Schall, Michelle(Allard) Dembe, and Steven (Allise) Wachs: doting grandfather of 14, proud great grandfather of 10. Dr. Wachs attended Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, and received his M.D. and PhD in Neurophysiology from Northwestern Medical School. Dr. Wachs started the Department of Neurology in 1963 at Allegheny General Hospital and served as chief of Neurology for 40 years. He was a member of the Allegheny County Medical Society, The American Academy of Neurology, the Pennsylvania Medical Society and supported many charitable organizations. Dr.Wachs was a member and past president of Shaare Torah Congregation, member of Congregation Poale Zedeck, and member of New Light Congregation. He was also past president of the Pittsburgh Kollel. Dr. Wachs was an active volunteer for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill Branch. He was an avid reader, passionate about classical music, opera, chamber music, physical fitness, learning languages, and traveling.
