Chronicle poll results: Participation in events commemorating the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting
We asked our readers if they would be participating in events commemorating the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. Here's what they said.
Last week, the Chronicle asked its readers in an online poll the following question: “Will you be participating in any events commemorating eight years since the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting?” Of the 151 people who responded, 38% said yes and 62% said no. Comments were submitted by 40 people. A few follow.
We will be joining our community at the memorial service being held at the JCC.
As long as there are commemoration events, I will continue to attend them.
It is too painful. I remember my friends in my heart.
I’d be grateful if there were something on Zoom because I no longer live in Pittsburgh.
I live half a block away from the site, so I already commemorate/relive the tragedy on a daily basis.
It seems like yesterday and it’s hard to believe eight years have passed.
Thanks to the 10.27 Healing Partnership supporting anyone affected directly or indirectly by the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue attack providing healing programs, resources and community-building activities, our community is well supported and cared for.
I plan to make a charitable contribution in memory of the 11 victims. Also I intend to study Torah with a New York City rabbi, as well as to drive to Wilkins and Shady avenues in order to recite Mourner’s Kaddish.
I would love to attend a commemoration service at the rebuilt Tree of Life where I grew up attending bar/bat mitzvahs and other simchas — yet eight years later and millions raised and our community has nothing to show at the corner of Wilkins and Shady avenues.
I will be reciting an original poem and reading the names/ages of the 11 from the bimah at my synagogue before saying kaddish when we observe the yahrzeit during Shabbat services Friday evening, Oct. 30.
I will be participating in a discussion of the anti-immigrant hysteria that motivated the shooter.
I’ll be spending my time learning Torah in memory of the Kedoshim.
Keep the 11 in your heart along with their families and friends. The three congregations continue to suffer from PTSD.
Always remember. Never forget. PJC
