Phyllis Burger Myers

MYERS: Phyllis Burger; Of Squirrel Hill and Stanton Heights age 92, died on March 9, 2011, wife of the late Henry Harold Myers. Phyllis was the daughter of David and Helen (Hani) Burger. Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1918 and lived in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. She earned her M.Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. All her life Phyllis loved to teach. Her first job was at Lafayette Jr. High School in Uniontown where she taught seventh grade Math and first year Latin. After World War II she moved with her husband to Pittsburgh. She was a substitute teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools for 10 years. After that she taught at Washington Boys’ Vocational High School, and then for 7 years at Arsenal Girls’ Vocational High School. She taught Mathematics and Science at Peabody High School for 15 years. She enjoyed her retirement years traveling and being a mentor to the next generations. Lifelong she maintained her devotion to Judaism and was a strong and vocal advocate for family values, women’s rights and world peace. She was a leader in Hadassah and Congregations B’nai Israel and Tree of Life. She is survived by her sons David (Nancy) Myers of Billings, Montana and Barry (Robin) Myers of Bethesda, Maryland; three grandchildren Kary Myers of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Timothy (Tricia) Myers of Butte, Montana, and Sara Rae Myers of Bethesda, Maryland; three great grandchildren Zoe, Owen Henry and Liam Myers of Butte, Montana; sister Marian (the late Jerry) Lieber of Delray Beach, Florida, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lee and Barbara Myers of Mount Lebanon and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister Beatrice (Sidney) Applbaum. Services were held at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. Interment Agudath Achim Cemetery/ Forest Hills. Contributions may be made to Hadassah-Greater Pittsburgh Chapter, 1824 Murray Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217 or Tree of Life Congregation, 5898 Wilkins Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
