Marvin D. Slavkin

SLAVKIN: Marvin D. Slavkin, M.D., 89, of Mt. Lebanon, passed away on May 5, 2015. He was born in Pittsburgh on Nov. 4, 1925, to Isadore and Katie Weiner Slavkin.  His college education was interrupted by World War II.  After an honorable discharge, he continued his education and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh followed by medical school at Western Reserve University in Cleveland.  During his first year in medical school, Marvin met the love of his life, Diane Legow. They married in 1949 and the love affair continued for 65 years until her death in December 2014.  Marvin practiced family medicine in Brookline for nearly 40 years. Ten years before retirement, Marvin began taking violin lessons again.  He played in the Jewish Community Center Symphony in Pittsburgh and in the Sarasota Pops after retiring to Florida.  He also volunteered his services as a physician with the Senior Friendship Centers in Sarasota. He is survived by four children, Steve (Sheila), Jon (Mary Ellen), Ron (Christine) and Sylvia (Ed Massarsky); nine grandchildren, Julie (Jeremy), Heather (Luis Fernando), David (Mary), Jeffrey, Michael, Matthew, Mark, Seth, and Katie; five great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog Nikki. He was also brother to the late Sylvia Slavkin Clateman and Rievan (Rosalie). Private family services were held on May 6, Beth El Section, Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, Beth El Congregation, 1900 Cochran Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15220.
