On Dec. 13, the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Rabinowitz family awarded the inaugural Jerry Rabinowitz Memorial Scholarship to Sarah L. Smith-Benjamin, M.D., a resident physician in the Department of Family Medicine. The scholarship honors the life of Rabinowitz, a member of Congregation Dor Hadash who was murdered on Oct. 27, 2018, during the anti-Semitic attack at the Tree of Life synagogue building.

Rabinowitz, a doctor of family medicine, “was beloved by people at Penn, where he studied, and adored in Pittsburgh where he was very much a fixture of the community,” read a press release from Penn Medicine.

Rabinowitz’s nephew, Elliot Rabinowitz, who also graduated from Penn Med, spoke about his uncle’s passion for not only medicine, but people. pjc
