Edith Hamburger "Edie" Blattner

BLATTNER: Edith Hamburger “Edie” Blattner, 85, of Squirrel Hill, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016, after a long illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Walter Blattner, and is survived by her son, Jeff Blattner, her granddaughter, Lily, of Bethesda, Md., her brother, Martin Hamburger of Pittsburgh, four nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. A native of Braunschweig, Germany, Edie and her family fled Nazi Germany and arrived in Pittsburgh on Sept. 1, 1939, the day World War II started. She graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School, where she finished second in her class, and attended Pennsylvania  College for Women (now Chatham University) before marrying Walter and supporting him in the creation and development of the Surrey Shops and J.B. Walter Company, and much of Walnut Street in Shadyside. She was a lover of classical music and opera, and will be remembered for her extraordinary kindness and generosity of spirit. Services were held at Rodef Shalom Congregation. Interment private. Contributions should be sent to the National Kidney Foundation, 3109 Forbes Avenue, #101, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Arrangements entrusted to Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., family owned and operated.
