Dr. Jacob G. Birnberg
BIRNBERG: Dr. Jacob G. Birnberg, beloved husband, father, grandfather, scholar, teacher, mentor and friend, passed away on Aug. 28, 2026, at the age of 92. Jacob devoted his life to family, education and the pursuit of knowledge. He was an internationally respected scholar in accounting and management, whose academic career spanned more than four decades. After serving on the faculties of the University of Minnesota and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, he joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1964. He became the Robert W. Murphy Jr. Professor of Management Control Systems in 1993 and an emeritus faculty member in 2006. Additionally, he taught at the London Graduate School of Business Studies and Oxford University (Templeton College). While his professional achievements were considerable, Jake’s greatest pride was his family. He was a loving husband to Stephanie, a devoted father to Marcie, Carla and Dana, and a cherished grandfather to Daniel, Alexandra, Anastacia and Emma. Those who knew Jake will remember his intellectual curiosity, his quirky sense humor, his love of travel and kindness. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, former students, colleagues, and the many people influenced by his teaching and scholarship.
