Donald Moritz
MORITZ: Surrounded by his loving family, Donald Moritz passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at the age of 98. Don was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 23,1927. He was the son of the late Maurice and Rose Moritz (Klein), and brother of the late Shirle Goldstone and Norman Moritz. Don attended McKeesport High School, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and went on to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1951. He married Janet Papernick the following year and they continued holding hands for the next 74 wonderful years. Don spent his career with Equitable Gas Company, beginning in the law department and ending as chairman and CEO for 16 years before retiring. He led the company’s transition from a local utility to the natural gas exploration and distribution now known as EQT. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Jewish Agency on Aging benefitted from his leadership as their board president. He also dedicated his time to the boards of other nonprofits including Carnegie Mellon University, Seton Hill College, Montefiore Hospital and UPMC. As a lifelong devoted Pitt fan, Don spent many happy (and unhappy) Saturday afternoons at Pitt football games and many hours watching whatever Pitt sport was being televised at the time. He was a lover of history, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and traveling the world with Janet and his family. Nothing made him happier than sharing life with his wife, children and grandchildren. His impact on their lives will be cherished forever. Don is survived by his wife, Janet (Papernick), children Paula Spock (Robert), Laurie Moritz and J. Kenneth Moritz (Natalie), and grandchildren Elizabeth, Ben, Addie, Ian, Paige and Sophie.
