Corey O’Connor, Allegheny County’s controller, was the projected winner of Pittsburgh’s Democratic mayoral primary, beating incumbent Ed Gainey.
The Associated Press called the race Tuesday at 10:05 p.m.
At 10:53 p.m., O’Connor had 53% of the votes to Gainey’s 46%, with 91% of the votes counted.
“Your voices and your calls for accountable leadership and growth have been heard in this Democratic primary,” O’Connor told a crowd at Nova Place after his projected win was announced.
O’Connor likely will be the next mayor of Pittsburgh after the general election in November, as Pittsburgh has not elected a Republican mayor in almost a century.
