Coming up
The four Eastern Suburban congregations will join together for a regional Selichot service and celebration Saturday, Sept. 4, at Temple David in Monroeville. In addition to Temple David, members from Congregation Emanu-El Israel (Greensburg), Parkway Jewish Center (Wilkins Township) and Temple B’nai Israel (White Oak) will take part in the service, which introduces Jews to the liturgical and musical themes of the High Holy Days. The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a Selichot storytelling for adults and children by Rabbi Paul Tuchman and others, including puppets. Dessert will follow from 7:30 to 8 p.m. with klezmer music and special readings interspersed throughout the performance. The style of both the music and the readings will gradually change throughout the evening to prepare for the solemnity of the upcoming Selichot service.
The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh will hold its 115th annual meeting Monday, Sept. 13, 6 p.m. in Levinson Hall in the Irene Kaufmann Building, Squirrel Hill. A wine and cheese reception in the Ostrow Palm Court will precede the meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. A special program will be held called, “Torahs for Our Troops,” the goal being for Jewish Pittsburgh to donate a sefer (book) of the Torah as part of a national effort to provide portable Torahs for use by Jewish servicemen and women stationed abroad.
The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh will present Gloria Steinem, women’s activist, writer and founder of Ms.Magazine at a luncheon event Friday, Sept. 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Omni William Penn Hotel, 530 William Penn Place.
