Charlotte Helfer

HELFER: Charlotte Helfer, who grew up in Squirrel Hill and was a longtime resident of Wilkins Township, on September 5, 2017, passed away in south Florida from health complications. She was 86 years old. Charlotte graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching with a certification in special education from the University of Pittsburgh. She devoted more than 40 years teaching students with disabilities for the Allegheny County Schools (Intermediate Unit) and continued to substitute teach even after she retired. Her enthusiasm for helping young people reflected her overall love of life and passion for getting the most out of every moment, whether through travel, swimming, tennis, dancing, theater, mah-jongg or hosting holiday meals for family and friends. She was a devoted fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams. After moving to the Wymoor community in south Florida, she joined the local Pennsylvania club and quickly earned a following of fellow Steeler fans who enjoyed watching her do splits on the floor after Pittsburgh victories. Charlotte also was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Squirrel Hill, more recently joined Liberal Jewish Temple in Coconut Creek, Fla., and was very active in Hadassah and National Council of Jewish Women. Charlotte was one of two daughters born to Sarah and David Cooper (both of blessed memory). Her sister, Doris Cooper Wiener (of blessed memory), passed away in 1960. She is survived by Jack Helfer, her high school sweetheart and spouse of 64 years, who continues to live in south Florida and deeply loved her. They had three children, Farrel, Ira, and Bryna, as well as four grandchildren, Dana (of blessed memory), David, Sarah, and Emily; and three great-grandchildren, Annabella, Aria, and Dante. Services at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc., 5509 Centre Avenue, Shadyside on Friday at 11 AM. Visitation one hour prior to services (10 – 11 AM). Interment Beth Shalom Cemetery. schugar.com
