Last week, the Chronicle asked its readers in an online poll the following question: “Is the Trump administration turning its back on Israel?” Of the 250 people who responded, 79% said yes and 21% said no. Comments were submitted by 98 people. A few follow.
No, because the Trump administration never had Israel’s back to begin with, only a political need to cozy up to the Jews, grandiose ideas about U.S. geopolitical power, and a keen interest in Mediterranean real estate. No surprises here.
This administration (and the president in particular) is fickle and disloyal. While I give him credit for his support of Israel so far, it is unsurprising that he would betray that trust whenever it suits his whims.
Everyone needs to just settle down and wait until this war is officially over — and that includes completion of the ongoing negotiations with Iran. The critical element of all this is the ability to inspect and verify compliance. This is for the U.S., for Israel and for the entire Middle East.
To use Israeli intelligence and firepower for the first four weeks of war, then exclude Israel from negotiations and sell out Israeli security needs, is beyond disgusting.
I believe Trump is trying to end the war to win the mid-term elections at almost any cost, even if it puts Israel in a bad light.
Peace in the Middle East is the priority and it would benefit Israel and the Abraham Accords. Thank goodness Trump is our leader and not Kamala Harris — for Israel’s safety and the U.S.
The Trump administration is like the weather: It’s impossible to depend on them for anything.
Trump has always demonstrated support for Israel — more than any other U.S. president in our history.
Trump’s sole agenda is Donald Trump, not Israel or the U.S.
It is not the responsibility of the U.S. government to prioritize the protection of another country, no matter how vital that ally is to our nation.
