Aaron "Jumbo" Narvol
NARVOL: On Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at his home in Squirrel Hill, Aaron (better known as) “Jumbo” Narvol, 93; husband of the late Shirley Narvol; father of the late Michelle and of Todd Narvol; brother of the late Vivian Solomon, Bessie Narvolansky and William “Val” Narvol; also survived by his close friends Lee, Karen and Adena and by many nieces and nephews. Jumbo was born in Dayton, Ohio on January 24, 1919, and soon moved to Pittsburgh with his mother and older siblings. Narvol grew up in the Hill District; he attended the former Fifth Avenue high school and worked at his mother’s restaurant in the Strip District. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941, and fought for his country for almost four years in the Pacific Theater. Sgt. Narvolansky received the Silver Star and two bronze stars for bravery and valor in combat. Narvol was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he received while rescuing a fallen comrade under heavy enemy fire. After World War II, Jumbo married Shirley Kanenson of Squirrel Hill, and they were happily married for 43 years, until Shirley passed away in 1989. Narvol was well-known in the Squirrel Hill community for his work as a deli-counterman on Murray Ave., for over 60 years. Narvol was a caring, compassionate, funny and proud man, who was known and loved by several generations. He will be missed and remembered by all those he touched. Services will be held at Ralph Schugar Chapel in Shadyside, Sunday, August 19 at 3 p.m.; informal visitation with friends and family will be one and one half hours prior to services (between 1:30 – 3 p.m.) interment is private.
