Wolfs receive warm Emma Kaufmann Camp reception
John M. Wolf Sr. and his wife Leatrice were the lead donors for the development of the new pool complex at the Jewish Community Center’s Emma Kaufmann Camp in Morgantown, W.Va., which they recently visited.
This was the couple’s first visit to see EKC’s new pool complex in action. Campers, who spontaneously ran up to meet and thank them, thronged the Wolfs. The couple also dined in the EKC dining hall.
“The reaction to my visit at Emma Kaufmann Camp brought back a reminiscence of my first experience at the camp 85 years ago, driving out to Zelienople with a caravan of Kaufmann cars to see the dedication of the opening of the camp,” Wolf said in a prepared statement. “The contrast to the grateful, warm, excited children who welcomed me and the expanded, modern facilities filled me with pride in what has been accomplished by so many dedicated people over these many years. It was one of the most moving and memorable days of my life, a day I shall never forget.”
He also thanked JCC President and CEO Brian Schreiber for his efforts.
The complex opened in May 2011 and features three pools, including a zero-entry pool and deep diving pool; a basketball court and an all-purpose court under a pavilion; new sand volleyball court; new campfire circle; and remodeled support facilities. More than 50 families contributed to the Aquatics Center and related ball field projects.
A longtime JCC benefactor and former president of the board, Wolf played key roles in developing all aspects of JCC camping programs, which include the JCC’s Henry Kaufmann Family Recreation Park in Monroeville.
Wolf was involved in the purchase of former Camp Lynnwood near Morgantown in 1971, as the new location of Emma Kaufmann Camp. His inspiration led to the creation of the Oliver M. Kaufmann Teen Village at EKC in 1979.
