Tu B’Shevat photo contest seeks submissions
A new contest will allow students to combine creativity and technology with a focus on the theme of planting and roots.
Students in grades four to eight in Jewish schools in the Pittsburgh area are invited to take photos and submit them to the Tu B’Shevat Photography Contest sponsored by the Agency for Jewish Learning in partnership with the Jewish National Fund and The Jewish Chronicle.
Tu B’Shevat is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat and is also known as the Jewish “New Year for Trees.” The holiday demonstrates the Jewish people’s link to the land of Israel. In ancient Israel Tu B’Shevat was associated with collection of tithes on fruit. The modern holiday customs include a seder and eating the biblical seven species associated with Israel, eating Israeli products and planting trees. The holiday has also become a modern Jewish environmental and ecology day.
The deadline for submitting photographs to the contest is Friday, Feb. 8. Each student may submit up to three photographs to Efrat@ajlpittsburgh.org in JPG, PNG, GIF or TIF format. Photographs should be related to Tu B’Shevat themes such as planting, trees, gardens, Israel’s seven species, the environment and renewal of the land. Winning submissions will be printed in The Jewish Chronicle and posted at thejewishchronicle.net.
Winners will receive a $36 gift certificate to greatrecycledgifts.com, and have a tree planted in their name in Israel by the Jewish National Fund.
