An unholy alliance
Rep. Lee Zeldin is correct when he states that “America has … no greater ally than Israel” (“Why more American Jews are voting Republican,” May 7). But after that, he and I part company.
Zeldin may see Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Congress as a “historic address,” but the fact is that it was nothing more than political opportunism on both sides. Speaker of the House John Boehner of Ohio saw an opportunity to get some Republican leverage on Jewish voters, and Netanyahu saw an opportunity to strengthen his stand for the coming Israeli elections. That natural devil’s alliance between “the right” in the United States and “the right” in Israel was followed by the U.S. Senate meddling in delicate negotiations with Iran. This is nothing more than a deplorable politicization of the natural alliance between the United States and Israel by their respective political right wings.
When I was growing up I was taught that two wrongs don’t make a right. I have now learned that two “rights” can make a wrong!
