Chronicle poll results: US military strikes against Iran

We asked our readers if they support US military strikes against Iran at this time. Here's what they said.

Last week, the Chronicle asked its readers in an online poll the following question: “Do you support U.S. military strikes against Iran at this time?” Of the 370 people who responded, 49% said yes, 43% said no, and 8% said they weren’t sure. Comments were submitted by 112 people. A few follow.

This must be done now, before Iran goes nuclear. The time for appeasement is past. It didn’t work with Germany; it doesn’t work with Iran.

I support Israeli military strikes against Iran at this time, as Iran is a real and present danger to Israel, not the U.S. I also support ongoing and heightened U.S. assistance in defending Israel against retaliation, as well as all efforts to protect U.S. bases, citizens and interests throughout the region.

Trump did not get approval from Congress. There is no clear plan and objectives.

We should applaud President Trump for being the most pro-Israel president we have had in modern history.

I do not support anything this president does.

I’m still waiting for a true explanation of why this was necessary at this time, other than to distract from the domestic abominations taking place daily.

Iran’s regime has long posed a serious threat to regional stability, Israel and U.S. interests through its nuclear program and support for terrorism. At the same time, military action carries enormous risks and consequences. I believe the priority should be preventing a nuclear-armed Iran while carefully weighing the costs of escalation and pursuing every realistic diplomatic path.

I believe in politicians following the rules. They were created for a reason. If no longer valid, then they should be changed — by an act of Congress, not by a rogue president and his henchmen only interested in maintaining power and control.

I am anti-war, but I support the U.S. and Israel trying to end this 47-year conflict by these means.

Netanyahu is using this action so he can stay in office. He finally found a U.S. president who also wants to divert attention.

This moderate pro-Israel Democrat finds it awkward to be endorsing this administration’s actions toward Iran; but I choose to be on the right side of history supporting Western values. Even if it does not guarantee regime change, the U.S. and Israel are trying to help Iran’s citizens.

Not the way it’s been done. There was no congressional authorization for war, no plan to evacuate Americans currently in the Middle East (including personnel at U.S. embassies), no planning for what takes place afterward to stabilize the country. The way it’s been done is illegal and sloppy.

When a strong someone repeatedly announces that he intends to kill you, you do not have to wait for the attack — you are obligated to save your own life and destroy him, or at least destroy his ability to harm you. Iran’s current (or most recent) leadership wanted to destroy Western civilization as we know it. It was our duty to prevent that from happening. PJC
