The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh will hold its first Wild Rumpus Race, for adults and children, Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Henry Kaufmann Family Park, 261 Rosecrest Drive, Monroeville. Preregistration by Aug. 8 ensures a shirt the day of the race.
“We invite you and your family to come out and challenge yourselves to an obstacle-filled course set in Max’s woods — the JCC’s 100-acre Family Park. Follow wooded trails and jump through and over tires, scale a wall, cross a creek, shoot a bow and arrow, and more,” Sherree Hall, JCC sports and wellness division director, said in a prepared statement.
The Wild Rumpus includes an adult distance course and Max’s Challenge for ages 5 years and older — a 1k run with obstacles and fun activities. All participants receive a shirt and a crown for finishing.
Registration will run from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The first wave of runners will leave at 9:15 a.m. with waves following every 15 minutes.
There are fees for the event.

The Hebrew Congregation of Chautauqua has invited Rabbi James Gibson to lead worship services and Julie Newman to serve as soloist for Shabbat the weekend of Aug. 10. The Kabbalat Shabbat service to welcome the Sabbath will take place Friday evening at the Miller Bell Tower, beginning at 5 p.m. followed by Shabbat dinner at the Athenaeum Hotel at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday morning services will also be led by Gibson with Newman as soloist, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

“Statues and Street Scenes: Exploring Historic Prague and Its Environs,” an exhibit of 24 photographs by Ira Rubin, is on display through Aug. 31 at the Jewish Community Center of the South Hills.
The photographs highlight the contrast between decorative monuments of 19th century Hapsburg Empire and the casually dressed, contemporary passers-by who walk among them. Jewish sites — the Old Cemetery of Prague and Theresienstadt Concentration Camp — also are portrayed.

Lila Hirsch Brody’s painting class at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh will hold its annual show through Aug. 29 in the JCC’s Fine/Perlow and Weis Gallery. The opening reception is Thursday, Aug. 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and is open to the community.
The Maccabi United States Junior Boys’ Basketball Team will hold tryouts in Pennsylvania later this year.
The team, comprised of 15- and 16-year-olds, will compete in the 19th Maccabiah Games to be held next year in Israel. Tryouts for the team will be held Oct. 13 to 14, at Harriton High School in Rosemont.
Barry Kleiman, a Philadelphia native and Bay Area youth and JCC Maccabi basketball coach and a longtime active member of the Jewish community, has been appointed head coach of the team.

The seventh annual Jewish Community Center Big Night has been set for Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the JCC at the Irene Kaufmann Building in Squirrel Hill.
The biggest fundraising event on the JCC’s calendar, the theme of the 2013 Big Night will be “Time of Our Lives,” a celebration of the ’80s.
The event will honor PNC Bank for its support of the JCC. It’s the fourth consecutive year that PNC Bank has been the lead Big Night sponsor.
“PNC is extremely proud to be honored at the JCC’s upcoming ‘Big Night’ event. The Jewish Community Center of Pittsburgh is vital to our community, and we are solidly behind this outstanding organization,” Sy Holzer, president, PNC Bank, Pittsburgh, said in a prepared statement. “This year’s event promises to be exciting and we are excited about the ‘Time of Our Lives’ theme.”
The evening will include music, dancing and cuisine from the era.
Corporate and individual sponsorships for Big Night, as well as the goodwill produced by the event, provide vital support for the JCC year-round.
“It’s a rallying point for the community to come together and raise a large portion of the JCC’s Annual Fund for scholarships and to support critical programming such as child and after-school care and special needs and older adults programs,” Brian Schreiber, JCC president and CEO, said in a prepared statement.
