Dan Droz, president of Droz and Associates, a small firm that has developed brands and marketing campaigns for the Pittsburgh Jewish community, dominated the American Marketing Association’s “Marketer of the Year” awards Friday, Dec. 7. Droz and Associates garnered seven out of 10 winning campaigns as well as the “Grand Marketer of the Year.”

Droz has been actively involved with marketing in the Pittsburgh Jewish community for some 20 years, having developed brands and marketing strategies for a broad range of community organizations including Community Day School, Agency for Jewish Learning, Temple Sinai, Tree of Life and Beth Shalom Congregations and projects for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, many of which have also received awards in the past.

Clients who won “Marketer of the Year” awards this year included Andrew Stewart and Leonard Silk of Silk and Stewart Development, which won for Construction and Real Estate; Gary Droz (Dan’s brother), a partner in Philadelphia-based Mainline Private Wealth, winning in the Financial Services category; and Woody Ostrow, whose company, CleanCare Systems, won the top honor of “Grand Marketer of the Year.”  

The Marketer of the Year Awards — the “Oscars of Marketing” — recognize both the creative work and success of the marketing campaigns. Each year, design firms, ad agencies and marketing departments from the region’s largest companies submit their best work to a panel of marketing gurus chosen by the leadership of the American Marketing Association, to showcase the top marketing campaigns produced in a given year.  

“We’re very proud of the work, but also of our clients’ willingness to take a chance with new ideas,” said Droz. “Great work is a joint effort of both a committed creative team and a trusting client.”

For 18 years, Droz taught marketing and design at Carnegie Mellon University, founding the program in multidisciplinary product development. He has received distinctions for his work in design, marketing and product development, including recognition as one of seven distinguished design graduates of Harvard University at the 25th anniversary of Carpenter Center for Visual Arts.

Local author, storyteller and songwriter Sydelle Pearl has a new book, Dear Mr. Longfellow: Letters to and from the Children’s Poet, published by Prometheus Books. In this biography of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Pearl incorporates letters that children wrote to him into the narrative.
