Erwin R. Steinberg
STEINBERG: On Tuesday, October 2, 2012, Erwin R. Steinberg Ph.D.; Beloved husband of Beverly Steinberg. Beloved father of Marc Steinberg of Northampton, Mass., and Alan (Patty Mooney) Steinberg of Pittsburgh. Grandfather of Jared Steinberg. Erwin R. Steinberg was professor of English and rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University and taught at CMU for 60 years. From 1960 to 1973 he served there as dean of Margaret Morrison Carnegie College and from 1965 to 1975 as dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. From 1979 to 1981 he was director of Carnegie Mellon’s Communications Design Center. From 1980 to 1993 he was the Thomas S. Baker Professor of English and Interdisciplinary Studies. From 1991 to 1996 he served as vice provost of education. He joined Carnegie Institute of Technology (later Carnegie Mellon University) in 1946 and retired in 2007. He was also a James Joyce Scholar.
