Dr. Stephen E. Fienberg
FIENBERG: Dr. Stephen E. Fienberg, passed away in his sleep in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Beloved husband of Joyce (Libman) Fienberg. Devoted father of Anthony (Magali) Fienberg of Paris and Howard (Marnie) Fienberg of Vienna, Va. Brother of Lorne (Nona) Fienberg of Santa Barbara, Calif. Brother-in-law of Bob (Esther) Libman of Toronto. Grandfather of Tiffany, Selena, Victoria, Juliana, Adam and Sophie. Uncle of Daniel Fienberg, Ori (Emily) Fienberg, Chana (Nachum) Shore, Avi (Atara) Libman, Devorah (Michael) Kurin and Miriam (Ephriam) Leiderman. Also survived by great-nieces and great-nephews. Son of the late Ida and William Fienberg, Steve was born in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) on November 27, 1942. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto, then earned a master’s degree and doctorate in statistics at Harvard University in 1968. Steve married Joyce (nee Libman) in 1965. After teaching at the University of Chicago and University of Minnesota, Steve joined the Statistics Department at Carnegie Mellon University in 1980. In the late 1990s, Steve became an American citizen. He had an illustrious professional career capped by his induction into the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. He was an enthusiastic hockey player and fan and passed that passion on to his sons and grandson. Steve traveled the world regularly, keynoting conferences, and enjoying the finest food, wines and single malt scotch. He was a leader in the Jewish community and a staunch supporter of Israel, serving on the boards of the Hillel Jewish University Center of Pittsburgh, The Jewish Chronicle of Pittsburgh, Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and Jewish Healthcare Foundation. His family, friends, students, colleagues and collaborators across the globe were deeply important to his life. Services were held at Tree of Life*Or L’Simcha Congregation, Squirrel Hill.
