Alvin L. "Al" Solomon

SOLOMON: Alvin L. “Al” Solomon passed away peacefully on February 27, 2013 surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness that he fought with courage and strength. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evie, who loved him dearly not only as her husband, but also as her best friend, and by his children, Eric Solomon and Tamra Marks,  Ronna and Clay Spitz, Louis and Sheri Solomon. Al was the beloved grandfather of Jason Spitz and Rebecca Schenker, Sarah Spitz, and Shayna Solomon. Al also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Lois Solomon, their children, Ed Solomon and Kathy Weiss, as well as many dear and close friends. Al was a life-long resident of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Pharmacy and also attended law school at Duquesne University. He fought valiantly for 4 years as a sergeant during WW II. Upon his return he opened the Waldorf Pharmacy in Squirrel Hill. Following that, his career evolved in many ways including serving as VP of Tile City and Owner of Protective Chemicals. Even after his retirement Al continued working as a pharmacist taking temporary assignments. In his final days, the sense of Al’s character was captured by the simple, yet profound comments of one of his physicians who said, “The world is a better place because of Al Solomon”. He was a man of great character, wisdom, integrity and was deeply devoted to his family. He had a variety of interests and skills. At the age of 50, he fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a certified pilot, but his true passion was golf. He spent countless hours playing, reading, watching, studying and discussing the game. Al was a stickler for counting every stroke and never allowed himself a mulligan. He had a proud and rare accomplishment of scoring a hole in one. Services were held at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. Interment Beth Shalom Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the charity of your choice. www.schugar.com
