Hannah Mintz Cohen
COHEN: Hannah Mintz Cohen; Age 84, of Shadyside, Pittsburgh, passed away at West Penn Hospital on November 8, 2014, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Hannah was the only child of the late Meyer S. and Ida B. Mintz, both pillars of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community. She was the deeply beloved wife of Norman E. Cohen; the fiercely dedicated mother of author David Elliot Cohen of New York and San Francisco and attorney and former Pittsburgh city councilman, Dan Cohen. She was the proud and loving mother-in-law of attorneys Stacy Browdie Cohen and Laureen E. Seeger. She was the extraordinarily proud grandmother of Kara, Will, Lucas, Andrew, Maddie and Josh Cohen and Angela and Grace Seeger. Hannah graduated from Allderdice High School in 1947. After attending what is now Carnegie Mellon University for two years, she graduated from the University of Michigan and briefly taught in the Pittsburgh public school system. She met her husband, Norman, the one and only love of her life, on a blind date that ended with his proposal. Hannah and Norman raised their two children in Erie, Pa., where they owned several furniture stores. Hannah was a “tiger mom” long before the term was invented, shepherding both of her sons into Yale University. Hannah was a congregant of Rodef Shalom Congregation, a dedicated member of the National Organization of Jewish Women and a lifetime Haddassah member. She was keenly absorbed in politics and the news of the world, and she was an avid reader for whom the iPad was a godsend. Wherever Hannah went, she eagerly engaged everyone around her. She was authentically fascinated with the lives of others. She shared her opinions readily and was relentlessly straightforward, dispensing advice and wisdom to her family and all others within earshot. Hannah Cohen was a force of nature and her passing leaves a profound void in the lives of her family, friends and community. She will be missed every day.
