Americans and the Holocaust

July 17, 2018 , 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

title: Americans and the Holocaust
description: The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, in partnership with the Heinz History Center, is proud to host historian Rebecca Erbelding. Dr. Erbelding is an expert on American responses to the Holocaust and the War Refugee Board. She has worked at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as an archivist, curator, and exhibition research historian for the past fourteen years.

Dr. Erbelding will discuss her new book Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe, as well as her work with the new exhibit at USHMM, Americans and the Holocaust. She will tell the fascinating story of the young government staffers who started a psychological warfare campaign, sent false papers into enemy territory, negotiated ransom offers with Nazis, and ultimately saved tens of thousands of lives.

Not only does her research unlock previously unknown information about America’s humanitarian efforts during World War II, it also gives a timely perspective as we try to answer ethical questions about our involvement in today’s world crises.
