The Semer record label was founded in Berlin\,1932 to record Jewish music. On November 9\, 1938 (Kristallnacht)\, more than 4\,500 of the records were destroyed by the Nazis. From 1992‐2001\, German musicologist Rainer E. Lotz scoured the globe searching for the recordings in far‐ ung places; miraculously\, he succeeded in collecting the entire roster of Semer’s output. Berlin’s Jewish Museum commisioned Indianapolis‐born composer Alan Bern to put together an ensemble with the purpose of performing the Semer repertoire.
