SUMMARY:Phat Man Dee and Liz Berlin: Shine the Light with Social Justice Disco
DESCRIPTION:CONTACT: Melissa Hiller\, American Jewish Museum Director Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh 5738 Forbes Avenue\, Pittsburgh PA 15217 412.697.3231\nWe are singing songs that demand justice for change to make this world a better place. Sing and dance with us! —Phat Man Dee and Liz Berlin\nThe JCC’s American Jewish Museum and the Center for Loving Kindness and Civic Engagement present:\nPhat Man Dee and Liz Berlin: Shine the Light with Social Justice Disco\nJCC of Greater Pittsburgh • Katz Theater 5738 Darlington Avenue\, Pittsburgh PA 15217 Thursday\, December 14\, 7:00 pm • $10-$25 Private meet and greet with the artists: 6:30pm Tickets: bit.ly/socialjusticedisco\nAges 13+ • Cash bar\n \nLiz Berlin of Rusted Root and jazz singer Phat Man Dee recently created an outstanding collection of social justice songs. Their credo about why they’re performing these songs is\, “We are singing songs that demand justice for change to make this world a better place. Sing and dance with us!” Recognizing the important role artists have in contributing to the global choir of change\, the JCC is hosting Phat Man Dee and Liz Berlin: Shine the Light with Social Justice Disco. The concert is a musical collaboration of jazz\, rock\, gospel\, poetry\, dance\, hip hop\, and disco with special guests Pastor Deryck Tines and the Lemington Gospel Chorale\, Ezra Smith and Christina Springer\, Johnny Creed Coe\, SunBear Coe\, and Miguel Sague Jr. They’ll perform original and legendary songs including I Will Survive\, Staying Alive\, I Can’t Breathe\, Have You Been to Jail for Justice?\, and many more.\nThe Shine the Light with Social Justice Disco concert at the JCC celebrates Man Dee’s and Berlin’s commitment to making our world a better place and anticipates their winter 2018 Social Justice for Disco CD release. The concert is also a program in conjunction with the American Jewish Museum’s exhibition\, Out of Many: Stories of Migration\, a photography exhibit that highlights the role that immigration and migration have played in the formation of our identity and culture\, and in sustaining our economy.\nWorking to redefine the term neighbor from a geographic term to a moral concept\, Shine the Light with Social Justice Disco and Out of Many: Stories of Migration\nexpress artistically the JCC’s mission to strengthen the fabric of community by amplifying the long held values of Love Your Neighbor as yourself and Do not stand idle while your neighbor bleeds.\nMore information about Out Of Many: Stories of Migration and the American Jewish Museum can be found at jccpgh.org/jewish-life-arts-events/american-jewish-museum/.\nOut Of Many: Stories of Migration community partners include: City of Asylum\, Hill House\, Jewish Family & Children’s Services\, Repair the World\, Union Project and Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

SUMMARY:JCC partners with Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Therapy Program
DESCRIPTION:Thursday January 3rd from 1pm to 4:45pm and 7pm-9:15pm\nFriday\, January 4th from 7am to 1pm \nThe Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh (JCC) is pleased to announce a partnership with fashion icon Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation. On January 3rd and 4th\, the Foundation will send its New York City-based Urban Zen Integrative Therapy instructors (UZITs) to Squirrel Hill to support the community as it continues to heal following October’s shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue.\nWhile on site at the JCC\, UZITs will provide treatments to complement traditional physical and mental health treatments and relieve symptoms of trauma\, pain\, anxiety\, insomnia\, sadness\, and exhaustion through yoga therapy\, meditation\, Reiki\, and the use of essential oils. Sessions for victims and their families\, first responders\, rabbis and their congregations\, service providers\, professional staff of local Jewish agencies and the general public will focus on reflection\, connection\, and rebuilding.\n“We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support as we continue to recover from the horrific tragedy that devastated our community\,” said Jason Kunzman\, Chief Program Officer at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh. “Right now\, we are intent on encouraging peace and healing for all who need it.”\nFounded by Donna Karan in 2007\, the Urban Zen Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring change in the areas of health and well-being\, education and preservation of culture. As one of several initiatives\, UZIT’s mission is to change the present healthcare paradigm by developing holistic treatments and support for patients\, loved ones and their caregivers.\n“We created the Urban Zen Foundation to quickly deploy resources to anyone in need\, providing support after emergencies like this one as well as to address longstanding health and wellness issues in society\,” Donna Karan said. “Like the rest of the country\, this atrocious incident shocked our entire team. We knew we had to assist those affected and preserve our culture through healing while providing education that dispels hate.”\n“The Urban Zen Integrated Therapy program was designed to put the ‘calm in the chaos’ and has been implemented in healthcare facilities around the country with incredible results. It is an honor to be welcomed by institutions and to supplement care with time-tested treatment modalities that have been used for thousands of years\,” said Menna Olvera Feder\, Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program Director. \nContact Jason Stowell jstowell@jccpgh.org for more information.

SUMMARY:A Community Conversation on Teen Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:A Community Conversation on Teen Mental Health\nat the JCC in Squirrel Hill\, Sunday\, April 28\nIn an August 2017 report\, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that serious depression is worsening in teens\, especially girls\, and the suicide rate among girls reached a 40-year high in 2015. In December 2017\, Harold Koplewicz\, founding President of The Child Mind Institute reported\, “Child and adolescent mental health disorders are the most common illnesses that children will experience under the age of 18.”\nThere is a growing body of research that indicates a strong correlation between abrupt shifts in teen behaviors and emotional states\, and the growing prevalence of internet-based\, handheld devices and social media.\nIs social media posing a risk to your teen’s mental health?\nSocial media has dramatically changed the way we communicate and socialize\, and today’s children and teens may be missing out on the development of important social skills when they spend the majority of their time on screen.\nUnderstanding how this new world of social media impacts our children is an evolving topic. Please join us on Sunday\, April 28\, from 4 to 6 pm at the JCC in Squirrel Hill\, 5738 Forbes Avenue\, for “A Community Conversation on Teen Mental Health” with Dr. Jean Twenge\, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University and author of\, “IGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious\, More Tolerant\, Less Happy and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood.”\nTwenge\, who frequently gives talks and seminars on teaching and working with today’s young generation based on a dataset of 11 million young people\, has been featured on the Today Show\, Good Morning America\, NPR and many other media outlets speaking on this topic.\nShe will speak about the mental health effects on teens being addicted to their smart phones and social media\, a topic that is so relevant and will reflect\, for example\, on the necessity and benefits of the JCC’s Emma Kaufmann Camp’s screen-free policy.\nFollowing Jean’s talk\, we will have a panel discussion with a variety of local experts to more fully explore the teen mental health crisis within our community and what parents can do to most effectively help their children navigate an increasingly complex and challenging time.\nFor more information\, please contact Rachael Speck 412-697-3539\nTo RSVP: https://jccpgh.formstack.com/forms/community_conversation
