DESCRIPTION:title: LECTURE: WHEN YIDDISH WAS YOUNG BY PROFESSOR JUSTIN CAMMY\ndescription: LECTURE: WHEN YIDDISH WAS YOUNG \nOn Sunday\, January 21\, 2018 at 10 a.m.\, three of Pittsburgh’s Jewish organizations are jointly sponsoring a lecture by Professor Justin Cammy titled “When Yiddish Was Young.”  Congregation Dor Hadash\, Congregation Beth Shalom’s new program\, Derekh and the University of Pittsburgh’s Jewish Studies Program welcome the community to this special event. \nProfessor Cammy\, Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and of Comparative Literature at Smith College\, is a literary and cultural historian with research and teaching interests in Yiddish literature\, Eastern European Jewish history\, and Zionism and contemporary Israel. He holds a doctorate in Near Eastern languages and civilizations from Harvard University and a bachelor’s in Middle Eastern studies from McGill University. \nDr. Cammy’s publications range from essays on canonical Yiddish writers to scholarly translations of Yiddish literature to critical introductions to new editions of works by Yiddish writers and memoirists. His book on Young Vilna\, the last Yiddish literary group in interwar Poland\, is forthcoming. He is currently working on an English edition of Abraham Sutzkever’s Vilna Ghetto\, one of the earliest Yiddish Holocaust memoirs to describe the destruction of a Jewish city. \nBeth Shalom’s new program\, Derekh\, is a center for pluralistic\, engaging\, transformational Jewish experiences that encourages participation in new ways\, growing and expanding Jewish experiences. Through this collaboration\, Dor Hadash’s Adult Education Committee\, Pitt’s Jewish Studies Program and Congregation Beth Shalom bring to the Pittsburgh Jewish community an event to inspire learning.
