DESCRIPTION:title: S.T.E.A.M. Festival of Light\ndescription: On Sunday\, December 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.\, Community Day School and PJ Library Pittsburgh will host the first-ever S.T.E.A.M. Festival of Light. Hundreds of children and their families from across the Jewish community will participate in an illuminating afternoon of science\, technology\, engineering\, art\, and math (S.T.E.A.M.) in celebration of Chanukah\, the Festival of Lights. This free public event will take place at Community Day School\, 6424 Forward Avenue\, in Squirrel Hill. \nAt various activity stations\, children will build modular robots using Cubelets\, explore light through prisms\, build Lego/K’NEX dreidels\, see a menorah being created using a 3D printer\, and design light-generating circuits using the Arduino electronics platform. Families will then come together in a candlelight-building competition\, where they will be challenged to design a 4-foot-tall candle that ignites using simple circuitry and recycled materials. Their work will be judged by engineers from Argo AI\, Carnegie Robotics\, Uber\, Ingmar Medical\, and other leading tech-sector companies in the Pittsburgh area. \nS.T.E.A.M. The 8th annual gala fundraiser will be held at the August Wilson Center at 980 Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. \nThe gala is the school’s largest fundraising event of the year\, and it will bring together more than 400 esteemed community members in celebration and support of Pittsburgh’s only co-ed\, independent Jewish day school. All money raised will go directly to support educational programs at CDS and to provide tuition assistance for families in need. \nThe night will include a short video program\, dancing with DJ Sosa\, and gourmet dinner stations with tropical flavors. The “Sun & Schmooze” theme will evoke the style of the tropics\, and guests will be encouraged to dress in island festive attire. The focus of the evening will be on three Community Day School honorees: \nCommunity Leadership Award winners and CDS alumni parents State. Rep. Dan and Debbie Frankel. During his more than 17 years as a legislator serving Pennsylvania’s 23rd Legislative District\, Rep. Dan Frankel has been an outspoken proponent of civil rights\, environmental issues\, and public health. Debbie Frankel makes a positive difference in the lives of others each day through her role as a licensed clinical social worker specializing in mood and anxiety disorders. The Frankels will be honored for their transformational leadership in caring for those in need in our community and as advocates for the vital role of Jewish education in Pittsburgh. \nCDS Volunteer of the Year and alumni parent Dana Himmel. Over the past decade\, Dana Himmel has taken on practically every available volunteer job at Community Day School\, from cross country team parent to Parent Association president.
