SUMMARY:Forgotten Stories from the Homefront: Jews in Western Pennsylvania During WW I
DESCRIPTION:title: Forgotten Stories from the Homefront: Jews in Western Pennsylvania During World War I.\ndescription: The Rauh Jewish History Program & Archives at the Heinz History Center presents Forgotten Stories from the Homefront: Jews in Western Pennsylvania During World War I. A century ago\, as Jewish soldiers from Western Pennsylvania were fighting in battles overseas during World War I\, their Jewish communities were fighting a separate set of battles back home. These local battles were about patriotism\, civil rights\, Zionism\, fundraising\, unionism\, religious traditions and communal bonds. Through an array of stories\, researchers Tammy Hepps and Eric Lidji will show how world-changing events challenged and enhanced the identities of typical Jews\, living where we live today.\nstart-date: 2017-11-12\nstart time: 10:30 AM\nend date: 2017-11-12\nend time: 12:30 PM\nall-day event:\nrecurring event: No\nevent address: Heinz History Center\n1212 Smallman Street\nPittsburgh\, Pa. 15222\nevent organizer: Rauh Jewish History Program & Archives\nevent website: http://www.heinzhistorycenter.org/events\nevent cost: Free admission

SUMMARY:Was Alexander Hamilton Jewish?
DESCRIPTION:title: “Was Alexander Hamilton Jewish?”\ndescription: Thousands of miles from the Old World\, on a sun-kissed island in the West Indies\, a young boy named Alexander Hamilton began a most unlikely journey in the 1750s. His meteoric rise from Caribbean obscurity to American founder has long captivated historians and\, more recently\, theater audiences. Yet one crucial aspect of Hamilton’s life has remained submerged for centuries: the weight of the evidence suggests that he was in fact Jewish. Drawing on untapped sources in the West Indies\, Andrew Porwancher makes the case for Hamilton’s Jewish upbringing and explores his ongoing relationships with Jews throughout his lifetime. This untold story of Hamilton’s ties to the faith and people of Judaism challenges our understanding of both Hamilton and the American Republic he helped forge.\nFeaturing Andrew Porwancher\, the Wick Cary Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma\, where he teaches constitutional history. He is currently on sabbatical as the Garwood Visiting Fellow at Princeton. His third book\, “The Jewish Founder: Alexander Hamilton’s Hidden Life”\, will be published by\nHarvard University Press.\nstart-date: 2018-04-09\nstart time: 04:30 PM\nend date: 2018-04-09\nend time:\nall-day event:\nrecurring event: No\nevent address: 602 Cathedral of Learning\n4200 Fifth Ave.\nPittsburgh\, PA 15260\nevent organizer: The University of Pittsburgh Jewish Studies & History Department\nevent website:\nevent cost: Free

SUMMARY:Salute To Our Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Event: Salute To Our Veterans Date: Wednesday\, May 16 at 3pm \nLocation: Adath Jeshurun Cemetery 4779 Roland Road\, Allison Park\, PA 15101 (North Hills – > see above website for directions) \nAdath Jeshurun Synagogue was founded in 1916 in the East End of Pittsburgh primarily immigrants from Eastern Europe whose families fled the Pogroms. It Charter was signed in 1918 – 100 years ago! \nAnnually\, prior to Memorial Day\, Community Day School youth\, teachers\, parents and Adath Jeshurun Cemetery Board Members come to the Adath Jeshurun Cemetery and respectfully discard the weathered American flags and replace them with crisp new American flags to honor these individuals who unselfishly have given service to our country. \nWhat happens on-site? \nReviewed with the children are rules of respect both to the American flag and to the grave sites of veterans. It is inspirational to see the enthusiasm of the youth (usually 6-8th graders) as they scroll down the plot graphic and search out the graves of veterans. There is a certain pride that is evident on the faces of these youth as they proceed through this exercise. They learn the value of a good deed. \nAdded value: the Army Honor Guard generally joins the assembled annually. Their decorum\, explanations of services they perform for veterans that have passed away and the hands-on experiences they provide are impactful. \nA living legend from WW II is always tries to make this special event so that he can interface with the CDS students. \nIn 2018\, we hope other local veterans attend this event so that they can be recognized and join the group in the above activities and in a special short memorial service\, created by a CDS teacher\, to honor those who have served our Nation. \nIf you can attend\, please provide an rsvp to (Renee at 412-363-3112).
