DESCRIPTION:The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh’s Summer Teacher Institute will be held Monday\, July 10 to Friday\, July 14 at the Holocaust Center\, 826 Hazelwood Ave.\, in Squirrel Hill.\nThe Summer Teacher Institute is a week long\, advanced level seminar designed to help educators gain the knowledge and tools to teach about the Holocaust more effectively.\nThis year\, the Institute will cover some of the most commonly asked questions about the Holocaust and how to address them in the classroom. Speakers include local and national experts on Holocaust education. Teachers of any subject area and grade level are welcome to attend. Cost to attend is $100 for the entire week (attendance fee includes lunch and educational materials).\nScholarships and Act 48 credit are available to those who are interested. SUMMARY:Kollel to hold Women's Summer Learning Program
DESCRIPTION:The Kollel Jewish Learning Center of Pittsburgh will be hosting its 17th annual Women’s Summer Learning Program Monday\, July 24 through Saturday\, July 29.\nMonday through Thursday there will be two morning classes and one evening class\, and on Friday\, one morning class. On Shabbat there will be a seudah shlishit.\nAll classes will be held at the Kollel Jewish Learning Center\, 5808 Beacon St. in Squirrel Hill.\nDevorah Kurin will be the presenter for the morning classes Monday through Friday.\nDevora Chana Weisswasser is a speaker and educator in Toronto. Weisswasser has taught different topics to varied audiences and has also taught more than 200 women for conversion\, authored a children’s book\, led a women’s choir and has served as a doula for women in childbirth. She is the proud mother of six children\, one of whom serves as a scholar at the Pittsburgh Kollel. Weisswasser will be the presenter for morning classes Monday through Thursday and the evening classes Monday through Wednesday.\nLeah Milch is a middle school and high school teacher for more than 30 years and an adult education teacher for more than 15 years. Milch also served in the Hillel Academy administration and continues to serve on several communal boards\, including the Squirrel Hill Health Center and the Jewish Women’s League. She will be the featured presenter for Thursday night’s class.\nElky Langer\, originally from Detroit\, moved to Pittsburgh with her family to join the Kollel in 2002. Langer is a teacher\, writer and editor. She has given weekly Chumash classes to women at the Kollel and teaches Chumash and Navi to high school and middle school students. Festival of Light. Hundreds of children and their families from across the Jewish community will participate in an illuminating afternoon of science\, technology\, engineering\, art\, and math (S.T.E.A.M.) in celebration of Chanukah\, the Festival of Lights. This free public event will take place at Community Day School\, 6424 Forward Avenue\, in Squirrel Hill. \nAt various activity stations\, children will build modular robots using Cubelets\, explore light through prisms\, build Lego/K’NEX dreidels\, see a menorah being created using a 3D printer\, and design light-generating circuits using the Arduino electronics platform. Families will then come together in a candlelight-building competition\, where they will be challenged to design a 4-foot-tall candle that ignites using simple circuitry and recycled materials. Their work will be judged by engineers from Argo AI\, Carnegie Robotics\, Uber\, Ingmar Medical\, and other leading tech-sector companies in the Pittsburgh area. \nS.T.E.A.M. DESCRIPTION:title: LECTURE: WHEN YIDDISH WAS YOUNG BY PROFESSOR JUSTIN CAMMY\ndescription: LECTURE: WHEN YIDDISH WAS YOUNG \nOn Sunday\, January 21\, 2018 at 10 a.m.\, three of Pittsburgh’s Jewish organizations are jointly sponsoring a lecture by Professor Justin Cammy titled “When Yiddish Was Young.”  Congregation Dor Hadash\, Congregation Beth Shalom’s new program\, Derekh and the University of Pittsburgh’s Jewish Studies Program welcome the community to this special event. \nProfessor Cammy\, Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and of Comparative Literature at Smith College\, is a literary and cultural historian with research and teaching interests in Yiddish literature\, Eastern European Jewish history\, and Zionism and contemporary Israel. He holds a doctorate in Near Eastern languages and civilizations from Harvard University and a bachelor’s in Middle Eastern studies from McGill University. \nDr. Cammy’s publications range from essays on canonical Yiddish writers to scholarly translations of Yiddish literature to critical introductions to new editions of works by Yiddish writers and memoirists. His book on Young Vilna\, the last Yiddish literary group in interwar Poland\, is forthcoming. He is currently working on an English edition of Abraham Sutzkever’s Vilna Ghetto\, one of the earliest Yiddish Holocaust memoirs to describe the destruction of a Jewish city. \nBeth Shalom’s new program\, Derekh\, is a center for pluralistic\, engaging\, transformational Jewish experiences that encourages participation in new ways\, growing and expanding Jewish experiences.
